Our fire engine red Organic Engines Troika is our fourth tandem. We rode a Schwinn Paramount mixte tandem, a Burley tandem, a Bikee E2 tandem and currently the OE Troika. Although I toy with the idea of getting a 'premium' tadpole tandem like the ICE or Greenspeed I think the law of diminishing returns is dictating that, for very little improvement one has to pay a great deal more. The Troika has an enormous turning radius and the Ackermann steering 'collapses' if one backs up at too sharp an angle. Oh, the chain line is as tortuous as the Wizwheelz and, unless the web seat is tight you can feel a metal cross member under your butt. Other than those niggling complaints this tandem is a winner...starting at $4K. (I believe the GS and ICE tandems are about double that!)
You can order the American-made tandem in many configurations. Ours has the custom, take-apart feature which we've used. It also has a SRAM dual drive rear hub which, amazingly has been trouble free even though we often climb up the steep hills from the Chagrin River Valley near our home. (The cranks are out of phase to minimize torque.) We also have SRAM BB-7 discs up front and a drag rim brake for the rear wheel (which we never use.) The builder basically works out of his Florida garage and can be hard to connect with, but I'd recommend perseverance to get a premium tandem at a non-premium price.
